What’s
Happening at the Cash Wrap?
Not too long
ago the most common equipment, in terms of computer technology, at a retailers
cash wrap was a cash register and some sort of small box to handle credit
authorization. That was pretty much
all.
Today, the cash wrap
area has become a haven for software and hardware technology. Many retailers are
even using the Internet to support store processes.
Let’s walk through
some of the paraphernalia customers get to experience at checkout.
Some retailers are using signature capture devices to enable them to keep
an electronic copy of a signature. The
advantage of this technology is to reduce the effort in dealing with charge
backs and save on the expense of printing.
Some retailers still use multiple copy receipt rolls, but by far most
print two copies, one to sign and the other for the customer.
Certainly, eliminating multi-part rolls would save a bundle over time.
Eliminating the printing of a second copy of a receipt is not that
straight forward. The ink and paper
savings may not compensate for the cost of signature capture, but the analysis
needs to be done to show the return of this technology.
Then we see check
readers at many retailers as check usage still surpasses the use of credit cards
in the US. When you require the MICR details to validate against a
negative file, it’s easier to run the check through a reader. You need extra space for the device to sit at the cash wrap
unless you have it built into the register system. In this environment its usually imbedded in the printer so
that it validates and franks the check at the same time. One step instead of two .
Let’s
talk about smart cards. I have this
American Express smart card. When I
used it over the last few years people were in awe.
It didn’t do anything for me then and it still doesn’t, but it’s
nice to know that I have a card with the computing power of my 8086 in my
wallet.
